Update 2: Arson investigation, Tara and Wieambilla

Police have charged two men with a string of arson offences, after lengthy investigations into a dozen allegedly deliberately lit fires in the Western Downs earlier this year.

Officers from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group commenced Operation Victor Ministry after 12 fires were allegedly deliberately lit in bushland near Tara and Wieambilla between January 29 and April 17.

More than 4600 hectares of land was destroyed along with 14 homes and a number of vehicles and other structures.

It will be alleged an early 90s model white Toyota Landcruiser utility was observed near several of the fires.

Yesterday, police charged a 48-year-old Wieambilla man with seven counts of setting fire to vegetation and one count of arson.

A 23-year-old Wieambilla man was also charged with nine counts of setting fire to vegetation and one count of arson.

Both men were denied police bail and will appear before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today, August 19.

The identification and arrest of the two men is a result of an extensive police investigation, which demonstrates the commitment of the Queensland Police Service to ensuring the safety of the community.
