Update on Norfolk Island Regional Council audit outcomes

The Australian Government’s consideration of the findings of the governance and financial audit of Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) operations, and next steps, is progressing.

On Monday, I – along with the Administrator Eric Hutchinson – met with the Mayor Robin Adams and the Deputy Mayor John McCoy to discuss the short-term needs of NIRC.

Officers from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications are on Island this week to gather further information on the quantum of support being sought from the Australian Government for payment of immediate critical priorities, such as staff salaries.

As the regulator of NIRC under the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) (NI), the department is reviewing the findings and recommendations of the audit to determine an appropriate response to the significant situation NIRC is facing. This work will involve determining implementation priorities and the appropriate pathway for supporting the improved functioning, long term sustainability and financial viability of NIRC.

The independent audit reports can be found on the department’s website at www.regional.gov.au/territories/norfolk_island/governance/nirc.aspx

I encourage all Norfolk Island residents to read the reports in their entirety and I will update the community as matters are further considered.
