Update on Tourism Response to coronavirus and Bushfires

Tourism NT is working with local industry and Tourism Australia on managing the impacts of bushfires and coronavirus on NT tourist numbers.

Yesterday, Acting Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Eva Lawler took part in a national Tourism Minister’s teleconference where both of these issues were discussed.

She sought assurances from Federal Tourism Minister, Simon Birmingham that the Territory will continue to be fairly represented in any national marketing activity encouraging Australians to holiday at home, given that NT tourism is feeling the impact from bushfires.

Tourism NT has fast-tracked its latest marketing campaign featuring the new brand ‘Different in every sense’, urging interstate travellers to put the Territory on their holiday itinerary.

Tourism NT is also providing updates and advice to our local tourism operators on both issues, and continues to work with Tourism Australia to monitor the response from relevant health organisations to coronavirus and advice from our industry partners around changing travel patterns and the likely impact on the Northern Territory.

It has distributed a letter from the Australian Government’s Chief Medical Officer to local tourism and hospitality operators regarding coronavirus. The letter provides advice on ensuring the health and safety of guests and staff and provided recommendations for how to safely handle any cases that may arise.

As stated by Acting Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Eva Lawler:

“Tourism is a major economic driver and job creator for the Northern Territory and the Territory Labor Government is working with other jurisdictions to support the industry during this difficult time.
