UPDATE V: Police advance murder investigation with public assistance, South Australia

Police have thanked the public for their assistance in identifying the location where 64-year-old Peter Hillier was fatally assaulted on the Eyre Peninsula.

Police believe Mr Hillier, from Lake Haven in NSW died on Sunday 29 or Monday 30 May.

Mr Hillier had been travelling with a 43-year-old man who is now in custody for Mr Hillier’s murder.

The investigation into Mr Hillier’s murder is now a joint investigation involving SAPOL’s Major Crime Investigation Unit and local detectives from Eyre and Western Local Service Area.

The investigation is progressing well with police now able to confirm that Mr Hillier and his companion had stayed in several holiday rental accommodation premises in Venus Bay over the course of a month.

Eleven calls have been made to Crime Stoppers. This enabled police to establish that Mr Hillier and his travel associate had been frequenting Poochera and arrived at the Poochera Art Gallery at 4.30pm on Sunday 29 May.

A scene was identified at the rear of the Art Gallery where it appears that Mr Hillier was badly beaten between 7.30pm and 8.30pm that night.

Major Crime Investigators and local police guarded the scene overnight until Forensic Response Section flew to the Eyre Peninsula and examined the scene today.

Police have made significant advances in the investigation having now established a motive, the cause and the location of Mr Hillier’s death.

Police are now seeking information that establishes the movements of Mr Hillier and his associate between 8.30pm on Sunday 29 May and 10.30am Monday 30 May.
