Vaccination enforcement confusion continues hours from reopening

Liberal Party Victoria

Victoria’s reopening is in chaos as Victoria Police remain in the dark as to their enforcement powers on vaccination rules at pubs, cafes, restaurants and community venues across Victoria.

Speaking on Neil Mictchell’s 3AW program this morning, Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt said his members had not yet been briefed about their responsibilities and role once revised restrictions come into force at 11.59pm tonight (Thursday 21 October).

NEIL MITCHELL:”Do police have the authority to ask to see vaccination status?”

WAYNE GATT: “Don’t know Neil. These are the things that are made or broken on the fine letter of the law, on the CHO directions. We seem to get them (enforcement guidelines) at the last minute.”

The last thing Victorians or frontline officers need is more confusion as to who can request their vaccination status, when, where and why.

This is another example of Daniel Andrews’ failure to plan and prepare for a return to normal life beyond COVID lockdowns.

As stated by Shadow Minister for Police, Brad Battin:

“As Victorians are set to return to pubs, restaurants and venues, the last thing we need is confusion as to who can check customers’ vaccination status.

“Victoria Police have been left in the dark and a smooth reopening has once again been put at risk.

“Yet again, Daniel Andrews has been caught with no plan and must urgently clarify the role of Victoria Police in these new restrictions.”
