A plan for the future of conservation, cultural heritage and recreation in the You Yangs Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary has been released.
Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio today released the You Yangs Precinct Masterplan, following a second phase of consultation which saw almost 500 submissions.
The You Yangs is a rich cultural landscape with a history dating more than 30,000 years and the Master Plan sets out the future for this important area, which sits between growing greater Geelong and Melbourne. It will ensure ongoing protection of the environment and provide for sustainable recreation and nature-based tourism.
Recommendations align with aspirations and strategic plans of the Wadawurrung people, Traditional Owners of the land, for future joint management of the park.
More immediately, opportunities for cultural education, cultural trails and visitor information are proposed.
Serendip Sanctuary will see a renewed focus on wildlife conservation and breeding program partnerships, along with upgrades to visitor facilities for schools and groups.

The popularity of the You Yangs Regional Park as a mountain-biking destination has been reflected in a recommendation to create a mountain-biking hub with improved facilities, as well as a kiosk and storage rooms that could be used for events.
Beyond bike riding, the park is well used for bushwalking, trail-running, sightseeing, picnicking, rock-climbing and abseiling, horse riding, on-leash dog-walking, and social events.

The master plan recommends upgrading the visitor information centre, carparks, picnic and BBQ areas, and existing tracks and trails to support this.
