Viva Gas Terminal Project

Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan

We are pleased that the Victorian and Australiangovernments have determined that the Viva Gas Terminal Project is beingconsidered via an Environmental Effects Statement (EES).

It is appropriate that this project is closely reviewed byboth levels of government, with the community given the opportunity to providefeedback. Given the size and complexity of the EES, we would like theState Government to establish a grassroots stakeholder engagement process, withthe resulting community feedback to strongly inform its evaluation.

Council’s submission to the EES process focuses on thefeedback we have received from members of our community, and our ownSustainability Advisory Committee. The committee – consisting of interested community membersand industry representatives – was created in early 2021 to engage with Councilon sustainability topics.

We encourage the IAC to analyse a wide range of potential impacts, including:

  • Public safety

  • Local amenity

  • Sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions

  • Marine environment

  • Land environment

  • Changes to Refinery Pier

  • The social and economic benefits of the project; and

  • Aboriginal and cultural heritage.

The City remains committed to its community-led long-term visionto be a clever and creative city-region, which is forward looking, enterprisingand adaptive, and cares for its people and the environment. A full copy of the Council’s submission to the EES isavailable here.
