Volunteer recruitment campaign

NRL players, coaches, officials and administrators have today launched the largest ever national recruitment drive for volunteers to get involved with their local community rugby league clubs.

The video reminds parents and participants that there is a role to play for everyone in helping to get the grassroots game back up and running following the suspension of club rugby league nationally back in March.

The campaign aims at bolstering the volunteer recruitment numbers in 2020 and beyond with tasks including setting up the fields and cooking the BBQ, to undertaking new tasks that are required to meet and maintain a socially-safe environment.

Coaches, officials and players who have taken part in the campaign include Brad Fittler, Kevin Walters, Mal Meninga, Josh McGuire, Kezie Apps, Jordan Mclean, Meg Ward, Andrew Abdo, Rob Moore and David Trodden.

Community rugby league will resume in July for the majority of participants nationally after it was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said the more people that can assist club rugby league, the safer and better for all.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of community rugby league and there’s never been a more important time to volunteer than 2020,” he said.

“Our grassroots footy clubs have been the hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our communities are the foundation of every local club and we need all footy fans to get behind them, lend a hand and support your local club get back to business.

“So, if you can assist in setting up fields, running the canteen or ensuring the respective return to play guidelines are being followed by all, it will go a long way to making sure this year is a success.
