WA avocados smashing it in Japan

  • McGowan Government backs industry to boost sales of WA avocados in Japan
  • WA premium food and beverage on show at Tokyo trade event
  • Western Australian avocados are expected to be a smash hit at a Japanese trade event hosted by the McGowan Government today to promote the State’s premium food and beverages and create new export opportunities.

The State Government has partnered with the local avocado industry through Hort Innovation, Avocados Australia and Austrade to showcase the popular fruit to potential importers, retailers and consumers at the WA Premium Food and Beverage Trade Event in Tokyo.

Avocados are the ‘hero ingredient’ on the event’s tasting menu, including avocado and salmon tartare, avocado and lobster mini burger, avocado mini croque madame and an avocado and chocolate mousse, alongside a selection of other premium WA food and wines.

The WA avocado industry currently enjoys market access to Japan, backed by the State’s enviable biosecurity status.

Avocados are WA’s biggest and fastest growing fruit industry, with just over half of orchards at full production age, while the remaining young trees will contribute to production in the next few years.

The new Japanese language Western Australian Exporter Directory will also be launched at the WA Premium Food and Beverage Trade Event, featuring more than 150 WA agrifood and beverage exporters, to link potential buyers to suppliers.

The Directory is also available in Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and English and can be found online at www.wa.gov.au by searching Western Australian Exporter Directory.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“The McGowan Government is partnering with industry to capture export markets for our avocados in Japan, and support this flourishing agricultural sector.

“There is a growing demand in Japan for high quality, healthy food and beverages and Western Australia is in a good position to satisfy the discerning market requirements for premium products.

“Japan is WA’s second largest agriculture and food export market, and it would be fantastic to become a leading supplier of avocados, in addition to our key wheat, barley, canola, wool, meat, and lobster exports.

“The WA Premium Food and Beverage Trade Event in Tokyo is the first event in a series of our Government’s export market engagement plan in Japan and other markets, as we work hard to forge new market opportunities as WA’s international borders reopen in 2022.”
