WA promotes diversification of State economy to global corporation

  • Perth hosts BDO Asia Pacific Conference for the first time
  • Minister delivers strong message about diversifying economy to delegates
  • WA’s strategic focus targets more robust economic and cultural ties with Asia
  • Asian Engagement Minister Peter Tinley will focus on the preparedness and capacity of Western Australia to increase trade and investment with Asia when he delivers the keynote speech to the BDO Asia Pacific conference this morning.

    BDO, a global business, tax and audit services corporation operating in 162 countries, is holding their Asia Pacific conference in Perth for the first time.

    WA has a strong connection to some of the fastest growing economies in the world through its proximity and longstanding trade relationships with Asia.

    Conference delegates will hear how the McGowan Government’s Diversify WA plan is focused on broadening the horizons of the State’s economy by creating jobs in six priority areas:

    • tourism, events and creative industries;
    • international education;
    • mining and mining equipment and technology services (METS);
    • technology and advanced manufacturing; and
    • primary industries.

    Later today, Mr Tinley will launch the McGowan Government’s Asian Engagement Strategy – a whole-of-Government framework designed to create jobs as well as support sustainable trade and investment growth by developing new relationships, and leveraging existing long-term relationships, between WA and individual Asian nations.

    As stated by Asian Engagement Minister Peter Tinley:

    “The timeliness of BDO’s first Asia Pacific conference in Perth is apt given WA’s increasing engagement with Asia.

    “WA is very keen to develop deeper cultural and economic ties that will help diversify our State’s economy and support growing prosperity across Asia.”
