WA to shine in short films showcasing our unique history

  • Screenwest and State Library partner to support WA filmmakers
  • Six short films based on WA stories from the State Library will be produced
  • Films to include a dramatisation of a Government House Ballroom murder mystery, a creative expose of our city streets, and a First Nations perspective on an iconic scientific event among others
  • Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman today announced that Screenwest, in collaboration with the State Library of Western Australia, would uncover and explore stories from WA’s history as part of the WA Reflections – Our History Rediscovered project.

Stories from the State Library’s heritage collection will come to life through a series of six projects, which will share in $90,000 worth of funding.

Stories from WA’s history, currently held within letters, diaries, journals, oral recordings and even blueprints, will be uncovered and explored through this exciting new initiative.

The projects range from a dramatisation of a Government House Ballroom murder mystery, a First Nations perspective on an iconic scientific event, a celebration of WA’s musical history in the 1960s, a creative exposé of our city streets, a journey of prospecting in the Goldfields from the 1980s to the present, to an immersive virtual reality look at famous Perth architect Iwan Iwanoff’s designs.

The State Library contributed $60,000 to the initiative, with Screenwest contributing $30,000 to enable this diverse group of emerging and mid-career WA factual filmmakers the opportunity to tell these stories from their creative perspective.

More information about the WA Reflections filmmakers can be found on the Screenwest website at https://screenwest.com.au
