Maria Island is one of Tasmania’s most stunning natural locations and the Tasmanian Government is taking action to future-proof it for future generations to enjoy.
Minister for Environment and Parks Roger Jaensch said the upgrades to critical wastewater infrastructure at Maria Island will begin this month, protecting the environment and supporting future growth in visitor numbers.
“The $1 million project will connect the existing wastewater treatment facility through a new transfer system, improving environmental outcomes for the island,” Minister Jaensch said.
“Delivering this important infrastructure project will ensure this iconic, much-loved destination remains an amazing natural and cultural asset for generations to come.”
Liberal member for Lyons John Tucker said the works would be completed by a Tasmanian company.
“AJR Construct will construct the wastewater transfer system, supporting local jobs and the economy when it’s needed the most in our recovery from COVID-19,” Mr Tucker said.
“The works will begin later this month and we expect they will be completed in time for the busy summer period, which is fantastic news for tourism on the east coast.”
The work follows the completion of another amenities project with upgraded toilet facilities at the Encampment Cove and French’s Farm campsites, located about 10 kilometres outside the World Heritage Darlington Precinct.
Construction of the wastewater transfer system is expected to take about eight weeks to complete.
