Western Australia and Zhejiang celebrate 35 years of Sister-State relationship

  • Premier Mark McGowan and Governor Wang Hao co-host celebration of the 35 years of Sister-State relationship between Western Australia and Zhejiang
  • Anniversary celebration includes two sector events focused on building connections in the health and medical life sciences, and primary industries
  • Reaffirmation of the Sister-State relationship directly supports objectives in the Western Australian Investment and Trade Plan 2021-22, and reinforces WA’s strong relationship and trading relations with China
  • Western Australia and China’s Zhejiang Province will celebrate 35 years of their Sister-State relationship today by reaffirming and expanding the important relationship.

    Premier Mark McGowan will meet virtually with the new Governor of Zhejiang Mr Wang Hao to re-sign the Sister-State agreement.

    The renewed agreement includes opportunities for both regions to work together to achieve economic outcomes in primary industries, technology, new energy, and the health and life sciences. In addition, it commits to continue supporting people-to-people exchanges between schools, business councils and government agencies.

    Both WA and Zhejiang Province have been exploring opportunities to collaborate in innovation and technology and emerging industries since the Western Australia-Zhejiang 8th Exchange Committee meeting in 2021.

    The reaffirmation of the Sister-State relationship directly supports objectives in the WA Investment and Trade Plan 2021-22, and is a reflection of WA’s ongoing strong relationship and trading relations with China.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “Western Australia and Zhejiang share a strong 35-year relationship based on respect and economic prosperity.

    “First signed in 1987, the Sister-State agreement has supported several important partnerships between WA and Chinese businesses.

    “The re-signing of the Sister-State agreement not only strengthens our economic links, it also solidifies Western Australia’s commitment to a mutually beneficial relationship between the two regions.”

    “Today’s celebration of the Western Australia and Zhejiang Sister-State relationship sends a clear message that we want to build stronger and more diverse commercial links with our Sister-States.
