When you talk, we listen – our commitment to community engagement

Community consultation is taking centre stage in shaping upcoming Council projects and programs in support of our local community.

At its meeting on 18 August 2020, the City of Casey adopted a new Community Engagement Policy, which was developed in partnership with the community.

More than 870 community members across the municipality made use of the opportunity to provide their input on the policy. Representatives from a diverse range of backgrounds shared how and when they most want to have their say on local matters.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Ms Noelene Duff PSM reflected on enabling meaningful community engagement required under the new Local Government Act 2020 and the importance of the Casey community’s voice being considered as part of decision-making.

In addition to incorporating local community feedback, Council’s Community Engagement Policy reflects best practice, referencing the International Association of Public Participation spectrum of increasing community impact on decisions.

“We are committed to hearing from all the voices that make up the City of Casey’s diverse communities. This includes Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, all abilities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” Ms Duff said.

“The community told us they value feedback opportunities; they expect to be heard; and they want to hear how their views were included in decisions or outcomes.

“Our role as Administrators is to ensure Council meets or exceeds community expectations. Understanding and referring to community ideas and concerns forms a key part of our decision making.

“Whilst COVID-19 has changed the ways we have consulted with the community in the past, our research showed a strong acceptance and preference for digital engagement as ways to have a say.”

Ms Duff explained the upcoming city-wide “Shape your City” engagement project being launched in September will seek significant feedback as Council starts developing a ten year Community Vision and longer term strategic planning to guide future decision-making in line with community needs and priorities.
