Winter School Safety Campaign Launched

School kids crossing the road

This winter, we are thanking drivers who take extra care and are mindful of conditions on our roads. Especially around busy areas with children like our schools.

In partnership with primary schools across Kingston, we have launched our safety campaign – Thank you for driving safely around our school.

With darker skies and rainfall common and making it harder to see over the cooler months, along with slippery roads increasing the danger for cyclists, it is a timely reminder of the importance of driving safely and remaining aware that we share the road with pedestrians of all ages.

As we implement our new Walking and Cycling Plan, including 10 projects that have already been completed, we know more kids and families will be cycling and walking to and from school as well.

If you’re leading the traffic, you can help by slowing down and demonstrating cautiousness, encouraging others to follow suit. Your example could make all the difference and is very much appreciated.

We’d also like to thank all of you who drive safely around schools for keeping our crossing supervisors safe. Our crossing supervisors play a vital role at 83 crossings across Kingston, putting themselves on the line every day to make sure our community stays safe when crossing the road during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

Now is a particularly important time of year to promote patience and respect for everyone on the road – be they pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, or our supervisors.

So, to all of you who do the right thing, thank you, and keep an eye out for the banners on display outside local schools around Kingston this winter supporting this important message.
