Woman punched in attempted sex assault, man charged in Sydney, NSW

A man is due in court today charged over the alleged attempted sex assault of a woman at Haymarket.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command have been investigating a report that a 25-year-old woman was assaulted as she was returning to her home unit on Goulburn Street, Sydney, last Friday (19 July 2019).

Following inquiries, a 30-year-old man was arrested at a restaurant in Harbour Street, Haymarket, about 5.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 24 July 2019), and taken to Day Street Police Station.

The man has now been charged with attempted sexual intercourse without consent, sexual touching, and common assault.

Police will allege the woman was entering her unit when she was grabbed from behind by a man and forced to the ground. During the struggle, the woman bit the man’s hand before allegedly being punched several times in the head.

The man, from Surry Hills, has been refused bail overnight and is due to appear in Central Local Court today (Thursday 25 July 2019).
