Wonthaggi brigade’s donation drive

Wonthaggi Fire Brigade members have coordinated the collection of more than 170 pallets of goods and $4,500 worth of gift cards after a short post on the brigade’s Facebook page.

Wonthaggi brigade's donation drive

Sunday 5 January was no normal day for Wonthaggi brigade. Earlier in the week, after sending crews to East Gippsland, 1st Lieutenant Jamie Moresco and Captain Arny Marion talked about organising a small boot drive to get essential goods to the fire-ravaged areas of East Gippsland.

So a small message was posted on the brigade’s social media page. Donations started coming in 30 minutes later.

On Sunday at 9am there were people everywhere. Cars lined up down for about 800 metres. People from all cultures helped including people from as far away as Werribee, Tullamarine, Resevoir and Frankston.

By late morning, brigade members contacted Wonthaggi SES to help with traffic control and the local Rotary group to feed more than 300 volunteers.

Calls were sent out for forklifts and tray trucks and within half an hour there were three forklifts, two tray trucks and several vans taking goods to a donated warehouse.

Wonthaggi brigade would like to thank so many individuals and businesses for the incredible response.
