A Council guide to help householders make the most of their recycling bins will arrive in mailboxes from this week, helping to ensure more materials are recycled and not sent to landfill.
The guide shows how residents can play their part in protecting the environment and keeping waste disposal costs down.
It highlights the items to keep out of yellow lid recycling bins, including:
- bagged recyclables
- soft plastic,
- polystyrene
- glass.
Council is committed to reducing waste to landfill by reusing and recycling as many resources as possible.
Director Assets and Operations, Shane Walden said the kerbside collection service of up to four bins is designed to help the community to separate and sort materials. Different materials require different processes to be recycled and contamination of recyclables can be avoided if residents put materials in the correct bin. Information on the ongoing Council bin inspection program is also included in the brochure.
“We would like to thank those residents who have been doing a great job sorting their waste,” he said. “We need everyone to do their bit by placing only accepted items in their recycling bins.”
Recycling that is contaminated by non-recyclables ends up in landfill, producing harmful greenhouse gases while increasing processing and disposal costs for ratepayers.
The only accepted items that belong in the recycling bin are paper, cardboard, household metals, hard plastic containers and bottles.
