Year 5s to take part in first Governor’s Civics Awards

The first ever Governor’s Civic Awards for Schools program is now open to all Year 5 students across the state.

The competition aims to highlight the importance of civics and citizenship education in the context of South Australian history.

Students are invited to submit either an audio or written response on why it’s important for young people to know about the establishment and early years of the South Australian colony.

Schools can also nominate a group of students in their schools who have demonstrated outstanding civic involvement.

Winners will be announced on Proclamation Day this year and in 2020 the awardees will be invited to a reception at Government House for official recognition by the Governor.

From next year the program will be open to all students from Years 5 to 12 and will include Individual, Group and School categories.

“We are very fortunate to live in a state and a nation built so strongly on liberal democratic principles that provide all South Australians with such opportunities in life,” said Education Minister John Gardner.

“This competition provides our students with a fantastic opportunity to develop an appreciation and awareness of the contexts that have helped form our state, the values that underpin our democracy and the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizens.

“The Awards are also an opportunity to recognise the work of students who have been demonstrating outstanding civic involvement in their school and community.

“I encourage all Year 5s to talk to their teachers about participating.”

Entries close on Friday 6 December and details on how to apply can be found on the Education Department website.
