Your chance to learn about Our Riverina

The closing event of the Ngurambang (Our Riverina) exhibition at Griffith Regional Art Gallery will provide an opportunity to hear from many of the artists.

This exhibition has shared diverse perspectives on the landscape from emerging and established artists from across the region.

Curator Jason Richardson said Ngurambang has been an eye-opener. He is inviting residents to hear from the artists as they discuss their contributions to the exhibition at an event on Sunday, 20 August 2023 from 11am.

“Art is an opportunity to see the world afresh and take a leaf from someone else’s tree,” said Mr Richardson.

“One of the reasons why we chose a closing event rather than an opening is to allow viewers to have time to form their own impressions; but now we’ll give those visitors a chance to deepen their appreciation for the diversity of media displayed.

“There’s a rich group of views that reflect many personal and researched observations about the local landscape, reflecting beauty and history as well as concerns.

“Our group includes artists with formidable CVs that are peppered with accomplishments, and those who are gaining skills through working alongside them — so it’s going to be fun to observe them.”

It’s the first time that some of these individuals have exhibited in Griffith and this presents an opportunity for the local community to ask questions about creative practices and draw on those experiences.

“It’s always wonderful to hear about the inspiration, techniques and practices of artists,” said Gallery Coordinator Raymond Wholohan.

“Jason has drawn together an interesting survey of Riverina arts that reflects many media and connections to the environment, as well as his observations informed from roles at Pioneer Park Museum.

“I anticipate this will be a stimulating discussion that reflects the ‘compare and contrast’ potential where group exhibitions really excel.”

This event concludes a project that began last year with a workshop for the artists that was supported by Create NSW and Western Riverina Arts through funding from the NSW Government.

The Artists’ Forum will be held at 11am on Sunday, 20 August 2023 at Griffith Regional Art Gallery with an acknowledgment of Wiradjuri Country. This is a free event and all are welcome to attend.

Ngurambang: Our Riverina will be on display at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery until Sunday 20 August 2023.
