$10k fine for Altona waste transport company

EPA Victoria has issued an infringement worth $9,616 to Pit Stop Recycling Pty Ltd for breaking environment protection laws.

EPA alleges the company illegally transported waste tyres from a Lovely Banks stockpile to Altona North.

Under the law, waste transporters must register transport of waste tyres with EPA. EPA alleges Pit Stop Recycling did not do this.

According to Carolyn Francis, Regional Manager South-West, ‘We are seeing more illegal tyre dumping. Some people try to shift the cost onto the community.’

But EPA is using advanced technology to crack down on illegal waste. EPA’s Waste Tracker system plays a crucial role in ensuring waste is safely managed. Safe transport and storage means EPA can safeguard our environment for future generations.

EPA and the City of Greater Geelong discovered the stockpile as part of a joint investigation. The investigation has led to regulatory actions taken on the property owner.

Carolyn Francis says ‘Tyres can catch fire, produce toxic smoke, and release harmful chemicals into land and waterways. If you see dumped tyres dumped, call us 24/7 on 1300 EPA VIC or report online at epa.vic.gov.au.’
