The highlight this month was the end of year awards at the different sports clubs within the Central Goldfields Shire.

Wonderful to see the talented athletes being recognised. October is also a month in which we celebrate our Senior Citizens and our Youth. And equally impressive is the amazing the efforts of the volunteers to keep the clubs operating and thriving.

In my article, I would like to single out the farmers in our community. I grew up with many of my uncles and aunties living on farms. Farmers are a unique breed. Resilient, adventurous, inventive and creative, characterised by fortitude.

You have to be one tough customer to be a farmer. The biggest single element affecting farmers is the weather. It is something that people have been trying to control for ages, with very little success.

Farmers are completely at the mercy of the weather. The two extremes such as drought and then excessive rain events that we are currently experiencing, nobody can control.

Too much rain, wrong time of the year? El nino or la nina? Four words but with significant impacts on the daily lives of many people within our community.

We live in a country town, surrounded by farms in Central Victoria. The wellbeing of our farmers is a priority for the whole community.

Driving through the countryside, one cannot but marvel at the incredible sight afforded by the bright yellow paddocks of canola in full flower.

Watching the news and reading newspapers, let’s hope the rain eases up just enough for the farmers to harvest the promising bumper crops sitting on the land.
