The Australian Government is continuing its commitment to flood recovery in North Queensland by providing $12 million for locally identified projects to help the 14 Local Government Areas most affected by the 2019 North Queensland Monsoon Trough.
Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said the program resulted from extensive consultation with individuals, business owners and local governments over the last two years.
The program is one of five totalling $60 million to be implemented as part of the Australian Government’s strategy for long-term recovery.
“This funding is part of the $20 million Recovery and Resilience Grants program that will directly support locally-led initiatives,” Minister Littleproud said.
“The 58 projects that have been put forward focus on strengthening community hubs and building facilities, ensuring water supply, enhancing tourism opportunities and creating jobs.
“These grants will help communities to recover from the devastating floods and steel them against the economic impact of future challenges, including natural disasters.”
Townsville-based Queensland Senator, Susan McDonald, commended the funding support, saying memories of the 2019 floods were still fresh for many people.
“We saw the devastation in North West Queensland and in Townsville where people lost their homes and their livelihoods,” Senator McDonald said.
“I’m really pleased to see that once again, the Coalition Government is looking after North Queensland people, businesses and the economy.”
These grants will be administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).
