$400,000 in critical infrastructure at Dogs’ Homes and Ten Lives

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The 2020-21 State Budget will deliver vital infrastructure that is supporting jobs and benefitting the Tasmanian community right across the State.

The Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania and Ten Lives Cat Centre do great work in caring for and rehoming dogs and cats, and the Budget locks in $400,000 to assist them with critical upgrades over the 2020-21 period.

These vital infrastructure improvements will help meet projected demand into the future while ensuring dogs and cats have a safe refuge for them to be cared for and rehomed.

Both organisations have significant shovel-ready builds and have committed substantial funds of their own. The Ten Lives Cat Centre has already committed $900,000 towards a $2 million plan for the Selfs Point site, and the Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania has expended approximately $350,000 as part of their critical infrastructure program.

The Tasmanian Government is providing both organisations grants of $200,000 that will assist with their builds. It’s a great outcome and a win for all, as it will help the Dogs’ Homes and Ten Lives organisations to continue providing for our furry friends while supporting local jobs and our economy as we continue to recover from COVID-19.

Tasmania has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the country and the State Government understands that for many Tasmanians, their dogs and cats are important parts of their lives.

We are continuing to improve arrangements for their health and welfare, such as our changes to strengthen the Cat Management Act 2009 that have recently been passed by Parliament.

It’s more confirmation of our commitment to support our community and jobs as we continue to rebuild a stronger Tasmania.
