A cleaner way forward for Casey’s waste collection service

The City of Casey’s waste management provider Cleanaway is trialling a new kerbside collection vehicle powered solely with converted cooking oil, rather than traditional diesel fuel.

Showcased during a demonstration at Cleanaway’s depot on Friday 2 February, two garbage trucks were fuelled with a low carbon, circular fossil fuel replacement called ‘HVO100 – hydrotreated vegetable oil’.

HVO100 is made from used cooking oils and fats collected from commercial kitchens, restaurants and shopping centres and then refined to produce the low carbon fuel alternative.

The heavy vehicle industry is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gas emissions in Australia and Cleanaway is pioneering this initiative to show how effective this fuel can be in reducing emissions.

“We are proud to support Cleanaway with the launch of the kerbside collection vehicle powered using low-carbon, diesel alternatives,” said City of Casey Chair of Administrators, Noelene Duff.

“This emission reduction initiative is another step in the right direction in Council’s commitment towards zero net corporate emissions by 2030 in line with our Climate Action Plan.”

One truck has been added to the existing Cleanaway fleet that services Casey as Council continues to explore innovative ways to improve energy efficiency across its services.
