A new direction for old key sites

The City is calling for input into how
land at the old Geelong Saleyards and former Target head office can be
developed.

Workshops will be held next month, where
experts in traffic, planning, heritage and urban design will discuss
opportunities and constraints in the North Geelong precinct.

The community is invited to provide
their own ideas at a workshop, as we consider the future use of the area.

The workshops will help inform the
creation of a draft Geelong Saleyards Precinct Plan.

The Precinct Plan will provide strategic
direction for the land bound by Victoria Street, Weddell Road, Thompson Road and
the Geelong Golf Club.

Council is supportive of a mix of land
uses in the area, including housing, open space and potentially some
small-scale offices or shops.

It has
resolved to respect the history of the Geelong Saleyards, with the future site
layout to retain heritage elements and include interpretive signage where
possible.

Preparation of the Precinct Plan will consider issues
such as:

• The local community’s ideas;
• The potential requirements for site remediation;
• The site’s heritage significance;
• Traffic;
• Stormwater management; and
• Current use of the site and nearby land, including
  housing, aged care, industrial, the Geelong Golf Club, Sphinx Entertainment and
  offices.

A range of technical reports that will inform
the Precinct Plan will be presented at the workshops.

The reports have considered an environmental
site assessment, movement and access, acoustics, heritage interpretation and
the condition of the trees on site.

Following the workshops and public
consultation, a draft Precinct Plan is expected to be presented to the Council
in early 2020.

The community will have an opportunity
to provide input and feedback on the draft Precinct Plan before a final version
is presented to Council.

Geelong Saleyards permanently closed to
the sale of sheep and cattle on 31 August 2017.

Target departed from its Thompson Road
office in 2018, ending a 92-year history in Geelong.

The workshops will be held on Tuesday 3
September from:

• 10am to 3pm at the Geelong West Town
  Hall; and
• 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Geelong West Library.
