People in Melbourne’s south-east will soon have access to safer and faster bus services, with the Clyde Road level crossing removal project in Berwick expanded to upgrade the bus interchange at Berwick Station.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan, Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas announced the new project, with the interchange to be upgraded and relocated to the south side of the station to make it safer, reduce travel times and cater for more services in the future.
Supported by the Andrews Labor Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution scheme, the bus interchange upgrade will also benefit local schools and residents by reducing the number of buses travelling along Gloucester Avenue, Reserve Street and other local roads.
Upgrading the bus interchange at the same time as the level crossing will minimise disruption to the local community and deliver benefits sooner for the nearby medical and education precincts.
The project design has also received an update after taking community feedback into account – and will now maintain access to Jane Street and Reserve Street and install a new u-turn north of Gibb Street, benefitting local residents, businesses and emergency services.
Site establishment will start soon – with a site compound, fencing and offices to be installed so major construction to start.
About 22,000 vehicles travel through the Clyde Road level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for up to a third of the morning peak. Removing the level crossing by building a road underpass beneath the rail line will improve safety and traffic flow, and stop emergency services from getting stuck at the boom gates.
The community is invited to drop-in sessions at Federation University on 30 April and 1 May, where there is an opportunity to speak with the project team and view the latest designs.
The Labor Government is removing 17 level crossings along the Pakenham line – with nine already gone and another eight to go by 2025. Combined with the Metro Tunnel and new bigger better trains, these projects will help make space for 121,000 extra peak hour passengers a week on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.
