The Australian Border Force (ABF) is on the search for volunteer foster carers to provide a home for the next generation of Detector Dogs.
The ABF Detector Dog Program plays a vital role in our enforcement capability at the border. Working in a range of environments across the country they are routinely tasked to search luggage, parcels, mail, air and sea cargo, cargo containers, vessels, vehicles, aircraft, structures and people.
ABF Detector Dogs are trained to search for narcotics, currency, explosives, firearms and tobacco. Last year our Detector Dog teams made over 2000 detections of illicit substances and prohibited items across airports, sea ports and postal gateways.
The ABF puppy foster carer program allows individuals or families to enjoy the fun of raising a puppy, while at the same time making an important contribution to the security of our borders.
Becoming a foster carer for the Detector Dog Program is also a good way of enjoying a canine companion without the costs associated with dog ownership. The ABF will cover all costs associated with caring for the pup, including food, veterinary needs and equipment while also providing expert advice and training.
In return, carers provide a safe home for the pup and also get them used to the sights, sounds and smells of their suburban areas, priming them for working in the busy ABF environment.
To become a foster carer you need to live in the Melbourne or Geelong area and:
– have a safe and secure yard that is at least 10 by 5 metres
– be willing to socialise the puppy with at least two or three outings each week to various places including local schools, playgrounds and shopping centres
– be able to walk the puppy at least once a day
– have a car to transport the pup (preferred).
