The ACMA has released its fifth report to government on the Australian Code of Practice on Disinformation and Misinformation.
The report sets out the code signatories’ efforts under the voluntary arrangements to combat disinformation and misinformation, as well as the operation of code governance and reporting arrangements.
The code was published in February 2021 and currently has seven signatories: Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Redbubble, TikTok and Twitch. As part of its role in overseeing the code, each year the ACMA provides a report to government on the effectiveness of the code and signatories’ reporting activities.
The key findings from the 2026 report include:
- Most signatories have provided a substantial proportion of Australian-specific data, with Google, Microsoft and Redbubble providing three years or more of datapoints across some Australian-specific datasets.
- Signatories continue to implement and enhance AI tools in the moderation and enforcement of violative content, with several signatories providing greater insight into the use of AI-enabled tools.
- There has been some improvement in reporting on elections since the 2022 Australian Federal Election.
The ACMA will continue to engage with DIGI and signatories to improve reporting under the code.
