The ACT Government has today announced that the first Molonglo Valley high school will be ready for the 2023 school year to respond to the needs of this growing community and to ensure that every child has a place at a great local public school.
In 2016, the ACT Labor Government committed to building a new school for Molonglo Valley to be delivered in two stages. The government has today turned the sod to mark the start of construction for the primary school set to take students for the 2021 school year.
The government has now announced that the high school will open its doors for the 2023 school year.
Molonglo has grown to around 7,000 residents since 2011 and as new families settle into the region, it is important that students have a schooling pathway close to home.
The ACT Government has committed $23 million for the secondary school investment which will cater for 600 students in Years 7-10 and include specialist science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and design learning spaces, a modern library resource centre, specialist outdoor learning areas such as an outdoor stage and environmental design spaces, and additional sports courts.
The high school will be integrated with the primary school on the same site, which will provide a smoother transition for students as they move from primary to secondary schooling.
The $47 million primary school allocated in the 2018-19 Budget will cater for 644 preschool to Year 6 students
This P-10 school will provide a state of the art education facility focusing on 21st century education philosophies and will be Canberra’s second zero emissions school. The ACT is leading the nation in climate action and school infrastructure is one way that the government can make a big difference towards reducing carbon emissions on behalf of the Canberra community.
As well as providing for the educational needs of Canberra’s young people, schools are also important hubs for the local community and provide facilities for many of our local clubs and groups.
The school will include a large community room and kitchenette, multipurpose gym that will cater for Roller Derby, sports courts and change-room facilities, outdoor turf sports field, outdoor multipurpose hardcourts and cricket nets for everyone to enjoy.
The local community will soon have the opportunity to have input into the school name, uniform and logo as part of the community engagement strategy for the school.
