ADA study grants: Support for tomorrow’s dental practitioners

The ADA awards a range of grants and scholarships to provide support for the dental practitioners of tomorrow.

These annual study grants for Indigenous, rural, and remote dental students are of great importance as they seek to address two critical issues in Australian dentistry – the prevalence of oral disease among Indigenous Australians and the challenge of delivering viable dental care outside of major population centres.

Indigenous dental students and students from rural and remote regions are encouraged to apply for these grant programs, which total $60,000.

Applications will be open from 20 January 2020 through to 31 March 2020.

Grants for Indigenous dental students

Five grants, worth $5,000 each, are available each year for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who are studying to be dentists.

To apply, you must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as being from that background, and be accepted as such by the community in which you or your family live or formerly lived.

You must also be enrolled full-time in an Australian undergraduate or graduate dental degree program that will qualify you to practice as a dentist, and you must have completed at least the first year of that degree at the time of application.

Students enrolled in degree programs to qualify as a dental hygienist, dental therapist, oral health therapist and dental prosthetist are not eligible to apply for this grant.

Applications will be judged by members of the ADA’s Dental Education and Training Committee using the following criteria:

– Academic performance

– Personal hardship (financial or other)

– Current and future intended contribution to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community

– Reference/s and supporting statements from others.
