Additional charges have been laid against an unlicensed driver who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash in the state’s Central West earlier this year.
About 4.30pm on Tuesday 5 January 2021, emergency services were called to Warne Street, Wellington, following reports five pedestrians had been struck by a car.
Police have been told a 34-year-old woman and four boys – aged six, seven, nine and 10 – were walking along the grass on the side of the road when they were struck by a Holden Commodore.
They were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however the two younger boys died at the scene.
The woman was airlifted to Westmead Hospital suffering spinal injuries, while the 10-year-old boy sustained serious leg injuries, and the nine-year-old boy sustained minor injuries.
Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit charged a 25-year-old Wellington man with 13 offences including dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous. Those matters remain before the court.
Following further inquiries, police have now charged the man with additional offences including:
- Manslaughter (x2)
- Aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death (under the influence of drugs) (x2)
- Aggravated dangerous driving occasioning GBH (under the influence of drugs) (x2)
- Dangerous driving occasioning death (under the influence of the drugs) (x2)
- Dangerous driving occasioning GBH (under the influence of drugs (x2)
- Dangerous driving occasioning GBH
- Drive vehicle with illicit drugs present in blood.
The man was formally refused bail at Dubbo Local Court on Thursday 7 January 2021. He will reappear at the same court on Wednesday 10 March 2021.
