CLP commits to new infrastructure projects in Alice Springs

4 November 2024

The CLP Government is delivering on its promise to the people of Alice Springs to reduce crime, rebuild the economy, and restore lifestyle.

In Alice Springs today, Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, along with CLP MLAs for Namatjira and Braitling, Bill Yan and Joshua Burgoyne, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CLP, and Alice Springs Town Council, to deliver critical projects.

“The CLP promised to rebuild Alice Springs’ reputation after eight years of Labor, and we are taking action to make Alice Springs once again a great place to live, work and invest,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.

The Infrastructure Plan focuses on delivering projects that:

Prioritise children and community well-being through improved sporting infrastructure

• $1.8 million for a new regional Skate and Play Precinct at Newland Park with funding contributions from ASTC and $4 million from the Australian Government;

• $450,000 for free pool access at the Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre during summer holidays, Saturday afternoons and all-day Sunday;

• Reinstatement of ANZAC Oval to enhance recreational opportunities;

• Development of new sporting facilities in Gillen, including upgrades at Jim McConville Oval, from reprioritised funding to support active lifestyles and community engagement.

Enhance community liveability

• $14.96 million towards the ASTC’s $5 million contribution to construct a new Alice Springs Town Council Library, expanding public services and enriching community spaces; and

• $5 million to establish a new Multicultural Centre to celebrate and support Alice Springs’ diverse cultural landscape.

Support the tourism industry with key infrastructure

• $4.8 million towards a new Tourism Central Australia Headquarters and Visitor Information Centre to help strengthen local tourism; and

• Deliver the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery within the allocated budget.

“As part our plan to rebuild the economy, we are delivering projects to improve tourism and a new visitor information centre to welcome tourists to town,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.

Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said: “This Infrastructure Plan reflects our Government’s commitment to targeted, sustainable investment in Alice Springs, and other parts of the Territory.”

“By reallocating existing resources, we’re able to deliver vital projects for Alice Springs’ future without placing any additional financial burden on Territorians,” he said.

Josh Burgoyne, the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, added: “We are taking decisive action to enhance the quality of life for all residents in Alice Springs. By creating vibrant spaces where our community can thrive, we are building a safer, more inclusive place for everyone to enjoy.”

Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson said: “Improving liveability for residents of Alice Springs is council’s number one priority.”

“We’re thrilled to work with the Northern Territory Government to build infrastructure that will have a positive impact on residents for generations to come,” he said.

“The diversity of our community is one of the things I love most about Alice Springs, and that is further strengthened with this announcement. Along with the boost to tourism, this is a really exciting day for our community.”
