With several motorists making poor decisions on the roads NSW Police are reminding road users to act responsibly and consider the safety of others as they travel this long weekend.
Operation Stay Alert commenced at 12.01am on Friday 7 June 2019 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 10 June 2019. Double demerits are in force throughout the period.
Officers will be a highly-visible presence on the roads during the operation, targeting speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt and motorcycle/helmet offences, alcohol, drug-affected drivers, and fatigue.
A 25-year-old Bomaderry man died, and another man is critical, after a two-vehicle crash on Gerroa Road, at Berry yesterday afternoon (Saturday 8 June 2019).
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said he was disappointed with some driver behaviour.
“We have already seen a number of motorists take unnecessary risks on the road this long weekend,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
“After the recent wet-weather conditions, we don’t want to see an increase in road trauma following the conclusion of this operation,” he said.
“Road fatalities have a tragic effect on everyone involved, from the families who must grieve a loved one, to the police who attended the crash, and the communities who have lost one of their own.”

CASTLE HILL
About 5.15pm (Saturday 8 June 2019), officers from The Hills Highway Patrol Command responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Old Northern Road and Francis Street, Castle Hill. A 44-year-old male driver from Baulkham Hills was breath tested at the scene and returned a positive result. The driver was arrested and taken to Castle Hill Police Station where he was subjected to a breath analysis which returned a positive reading of 0.175. At the time of the crash, the driver’s 11-year-old daughter was a passenger in his vehicle. Luckily, she was uninjured. The driver was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for the offences drive with high range PCA and unlicensed driver. He is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court at a later date. A child at risk notification was completed.
CARLINGFORD
About 1.45am (Sunday 9 June 2019), a 20-year-old Pemulwuy man was detected by police travelling at 102km/h in a 60km/h area on Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford. The driver was stopped, and police saw a male passenger not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceed speed limit for more than 30km/h, driving with an unrestrained passenger (person 16 years or older), and for not comply with P2 licence, no ‘P’ plates.
DARLING POINT
About 8.30am (Saturday 8 June 2019), police were performing stationary random breath tests when they stopped a vehicle on Kidman Way, Darlington Point. The driver, a 39-year-old Victorian man was breath tested returning a negative result. While talking to the driver, police saw a three-month-old baby girl unrestrained within a capsule in the vehicle. The man was issued with a traffic infringement notice for unrestrained child under six months.
HAY
About 2am (Sunday 9 June 2019), officers stopped the female learner driver of a Holden Commodore on Orson Street, Hay, for a random breath test and returned a positive result. The driver was arrested and taken to Hay Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis returning a positive reading of 0.076. The female adult passenger was seated in the rear and not wearing a seatbelt. A baby capsule next to the passenger contained an eight-month-old baby unrestrained. The driver was issued with traffic infringement notices for unaccompanied learner, not display ‘L’ plates, two unrestrained passengers. She was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for low range PCA to appear at Hay Local Court on Monday 1 July 2019.
BINDA
About 3.50pm (Saturday 8 June 2019), a 63-year-old male driver from Camden South, was detected travelling at 120km/h in a 100km/h zone on Junction Point Road, Binda, (same location of scene of fatal crash the previous day after a 91-year-old man died in a multi-vehicle crash in Crookwell on Friday 7 June 2019). The man was issued a traffic infringement notice for motor vehicle exceed speed more than 20km/h.
SUTTON FORREST
About 10.50pm (Saturday 8 June 2019), an 18-year-old male P2 driver from Hill Top, was detected travelling at 165km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Hume Highway, Sutton Forrest. His licence was immediately suspended. He was also issued with a traffic infringement notice for motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45km/h and his licence was suspended for six months.
