About the team and what we offer

The Research and Reviews Team will play a central role in delivering the Authority’s exciting work program for 2022 and beyond. The Authority will make a strong contribution to the evidence base required to inform Australia’s future emissions reductions goals and policies, including by:

  • Undertaking a review of eligibility criteria for offsets for Commonwealth schemes including Climate Active and the Indo-Pacific Carbon Offsets Scheme;
  • Investigating the biological and geological sequestration opportunities in Australia;
  • Analysing near to medium term abatement opportunities for key sectors, how these might factor into industry transition plans and what role Government can play in maximising opportunities and tackling barriers; and
  • Undertaking the next statutory reviews of the Emissions Reduction Fund and National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme, with a view to ensuring they are fit-for-purpose in the world of “Paris Plus”.

Our ideal candidate

The Authority is seeking an officer with well-developed policy and analytical skills to contribute to key elements of the Research and Reviews work program.

Highly desirable skills and experience include:

  • Analysis, policy development, and data and communication skills;
  • Knowledge of one or more of Australian climate change policies which are subject to review: the Emissions Reduction Fund; the National Greenhouse Reporting scheme legislation;
  • Knowledge of other Australian climate change policies and programs including: the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory; Low emissions technologies; and carbon markets; and

Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent work experience, including economics, science, engineering, public policy or law.

What you will do

The successful applicant will:

  • Undertake specialist research and analysis, including collecting and interpreting evidence to provide accurate and relevant policy advice.
  • Contribute to the planning, drafting, editing, and communication of papers, reports and reviews.
  • Assist with the efficient running of the Research and Reviews Team, including contributing to the drafting of Authority meeting papers, drafting executive and ministerial briefings and preparing responses to public queries.
  • Work collaboratively in a small team to deliver outcomes.
  • Monitor news information sources to support the activities of the Authority and keep abreast of climate change policy issues.
  • Assist with planning and consultation with industry and government stakeholders.

Eligibility and security clearance

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

There are opportunities to consider working remotely. The majority of the team are based in Canberra.

This process is being used to fill roles that are either non-ongoing or on-going vacancies in the Authority. A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within the Authority over the next 12 months.
