APS welcomes appointment of National Suicide Prevention Adviser

Australia’s peak psychology body has welcomed the appointment of Ms Christine Morgan to the new role of National Suicide Prevention Adviser by the Morrison Government.

Australian Psychological Society (APS) CEO Frances Mirabelli said Australia’s psychologists and their clients were encouraged by the government’s focus on the mental health crisis in Australia.

“The APS has long been drawing attention to the mental health crisis that is sweeping across Australia and the dire impact of suicide on communities.

“We know that suicidal behaviour or death by suicide is complex and multifactorial.

“Any steps taken to improve suicide prevention services and to deliver better mental health outcomes for Australians is fully supported by the APS.

“The Government’s decision to make suicide prevention a national priority is to be applauded,” she said.

Ms Mirabelli said she was looking forward to working with Ms Morgan on reducing the devastating impact of suicide on our communities.

“It is clear that Ms Morgan’s extensive experience in the mental health space, including her current role as CEO of the National Mental Health Commission, ensures that she is very well placed to lead the whole-of-government coordination and delivery of suicide prevention activities,” she said.
