Building and Construction Minister Elise Archer has serious questions to answer about the emerging crisis in Tasmania’s building industry, following its failure to deal with flammable cladding.
With industry insiders warning of building work “screaming to a halt”*, Ms Archer must detail:
- How many building surveyors have been put out of work so far?
- How many more jobs are at risk?
Shadow Minister for Building and Construction Jen Butler said the closure of businesses due to the Government’s inaction proved that yesterday’s meeting was a farce for Tasmanian employers and skilled surveyors.
“Inaction and delays from Elise Archer will only lead to more job losses,” Ms Butler said.
“Waiting for any action until the next meeting in September is too long for employers who are being slugged with huge increases to costs.
“The Government risks significant job losses if the hundreds of developments in the pipeline for surveying companies grind to a standstill.
“Elise Archer can try to shift the blame but the fact is she is the Minister and she should have been working on a solution well before yesterday’s talkfest.
“The warning signs have been ignored for five years.
“If she allows this uncertainty to drag on she risks thousands of Tasmanian construction jobs.”
