Archer’s massive backflip on building protections tip of iceberg

Tasmanian Labor

Just weeks after rejecting Labor’s call for an inquiry into better protections for the building industry and homeowners, Minister Elise Archer has finally admitted there is a problem.

Shadow Minister for Building and Construction Jen Butler said Ms Archer had this afternoon signalled her government’s intention to reintroduce home warranty insurance in Tasmania.

“It is remarkable that after shutting down Labor’s calls for an inquiry the Minister now admits there is a problem,” Ms Butler said.

“Since raising this crucial issue, widespread problems have been brought to light and the introduction of home warranty insurance addresses some of these.

“However, it won’t provide any relief for the hundreds of Tasmanian home builders who have already been stung by this government’s lack of protection.

“An inquiry would go further than today’s announcement, helping to consider a wholistic approach. Labor will not stop calling for this crucial inquiry until the Liberal Government agrees it is urgent and necessary.

“I congratulate the Minister for finally coming to the table and admitting something needs to be done after a flood of complaints from Tasmanians who, in many cases, have lost their life savings.

“Ms Archer must now go the extra step and support Labor’s call to future proof our building industry and better protect both builders and consumers.”
