Backpacks For New Beginnings: Winter Relief Drive

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is calling on the community to donate backpacks with essential items to support people seeking refuge this winter.

The Winter Relief Drive is delivered in collaboration with Platform Nine, a local organisation that provides temporary and crisis accommodation for people who have survived domestic violence or have been impacted by homelessness. Since 2015, they’ve supported over 1200 women, children and men. They are also the largest provider of adult temporary and crisis housing in Southeast Sydney.

Council is proud to support this campaign, especially during the colder months when many people face added challenges. This initiative gives the community a meaningful way to come together and provide support to those in need.

The community is encouraged to fill a backpack with items such as:

  • Colouring books and pencils
  • Small toys
  • Socks and beanies
  • Non-perishable, in-date food items
  • Toiletries
  • Items for boys and men

Donations do not need to fill a backpack. Community members are encouraged to give what they can, whether it is a single item or several. Every contribution is appreciated and will help make a difference.

Items can be dropped off at the Georges River Civic Centre in Hurstville. The collection point located in the lobby behind the first customer service desk.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, “Winter can be especially challenging for people without stable housing or those escaping difficult situations. This campaign is a simple but powerful way our community can show compassion for those experiencing hardship.”

“Every donation can make a real difference. I encourage everyone to get involved and help bring some warmth to those in need this winter”.
