Barwon Water Colac treatment plant upgrade

Population growth and increased industrial activity means there is a need for greater wastewater treatment capacity in the Colac region.

Barwon Region Water Corporation has applied to Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) for a development licence to upgrade its Colac Plant at Treatment Works Road Colac East.

The proposed overall capacity increase to the existing wastewater treatment facility would go from 5.7ML/day to 7 ML/day.

Treated effluent will be discharged to Colac Lake using the existing facility. The existing licence discharge limits for most of the parameters will be maintained and reduced. The proposed upgraded plant will result in lower median concentrations of nutrients, but in a higher volume, with an increase in total nitrogen load and a decrease in total phosphorus load at the maximum discharge volume.

The upgrade will increase the number of plant process units and upgrade some of the existing facilities within the existing plant.
