Bassendean residents embrace Your Move program

  • More than 4,000 people signed up to participate in Your Move Bassendean
  • Over 200 signs posted in the area offering wayfinding and promoting bicycle safety
  • New bike repair station up and running on Old Perth Road
  • Residents in the Town of Bassendean have embraced the Your Move program with more than 4,000 people participating in the behaviour change program in the first six months of 2019.

The Your Move program is a free personalised active travel program that provides information, materials and support to encourage individuals, workplaces and schools to find more active ways to travel.

The Department of Transport’s Your Move team has worked with the Town of Bassendean and local residents to find ways to incorporate more walking, cycling and public transport into their lives.

As part of Your Move Bassendean, 150 wayfinding signs have been installed in the suburbs of Bassendean, Eden Hill and Ashfield.

The signs are used to highlight the walkability of the local area and point out times to local destinations. Each directional sign points to four different nearby locations of interest – a school, a park, the shops, the library, a skate park – and gives the time it should take to walk or ride to the destination.

Additionally, 58 signs have been installed to guide cyclists and pedestrians to Bassendean train station as part of the Public Transport Authority’s Connecting Stations project.

A bike repair station has also been installed on Old Perth Road, which allows riders to do simple maintenance and quick repairs on any bike. The station consists of tools to repair bikes and a bike pump.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“I am really thrilled that so many residents, businesses and schools in Bassendean have taken the Your Move message to heart and have committed to changing the way they get around.

“The success of Your Move Bassendean has resulted in the area securing heaps of new infrastructure that supports people who choose to walk, ride a bike or catch public transport.

“Previously rolled out in Cockburn, Wanneroo and Victoria Park, more than 25,000 residents in total have now signed up to the intensive Your Move program which is an outstanding result.

“Putting down the car keys and embracing active transport is a great way to get more exercise, save money and help the environment at the same time.”

As stated by Bassendean MLA Dave Kelly:

“Bassendean has really embraced the Your Move program and with the new infrastructure I’m sure more people will be able to adopt walking and cycling into their daily routine.

“With our proximity to the train line and our leafy streets, our area is the perfect place to forgo the car trip and take a walk instead.

“I’m sure the community will continue to take this program on board and rethink the way they travel.”
