Bayside shows support for NAIDOC Week

On Monday, we celebrated the start of NAIDOC Week with a community screening of Warwick Thornton’s newest movie, The New Boy. The film, which had already premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year, features Cate Blanchett as Sister Eileen, a rebel nun who runs an Aboriginal children’s mission.

Over 200 Baysider’s showed their support for NAIDOC Week by filling the theatre at Palace Cinemas in North Brighton, making the evening a great success. The event commenced with a moving didgeridoo performance and a Welcome to Country from Bunurong Land Council.

NAIDOC Week, which runs from 2 July to 9 July, is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations histories and cultures and participate in celebrations of one of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

The 2023 theme is For Our Elders. The theme pays respects to the Elders lost and to those who continue to fight for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all Nations. Elders are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, teachers, leaders and nurturers in the Indigenous community.
