Wodonga Council’s Gardens team have rejuvenated an underused area of Belvoir Park with an adventure nature play space.
Inspired by the Royal Park Nature Play Playground near the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, the team have used logs from the tree works at Baranduda Fields and mulch from the street trees crew to form trail loops and points of interest throughout the vegetated park corner.
A small maze has been formed from hedging the existing shrubs and include trail loops, stepping stones, balance logs, mounds with additional planting of small native shrubs and grasses.
“We saw some natural trails near the children’s hospital in Melbourne and thought we use a similar concept when we had the logs from Baranduda Fields to give children somewhere to walk around, explore and have a bit of fun,” Arborist Co-ordinator Brad O’Grady said.
“Everything is natural materials so it gives them that feeling of being out in the bush.”
Gardens Co-ordinator Brett Pantling said the space had been planted about 10 years ago and was chosen as it wasn’t well-used.
“We’ve lined the path with mulch from the works the street tree crew do and used logs that came from Baranduda Fields as well as planted native shrubs to help bulk out the space even more,” he said.
The park is located in the south-west corner of Belvoir Park near the small football goals off Dick St.
Additional seating, shelter and bins are planned for the site.
