Bombo stairs update

Kiama Council acknowledges the delay to the opening of the Bombo Quarry staircase – Bombo Headland Eco Walk.

The project to build a 13-metre staircase linking the bottom of the quarry with adjacent walking tracks and provide a viewing platform was first announced in April 2018.

The construction of the stairs was delayed by several issues, including significant holdups due to COVID lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, weather events that inundated the quarry as well as the supply issues that have been affecting the construction industry since the COVID pandemic, in this case delaying the fabrication of the stair balustrades.

Our contractors are currently working through the final stages of compliance, after which they will be able to hand ownership of the staircase back to Council.

Once this happens, Council can announce an opening date for the staircase.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Liveability Michael Malone said: “The series of high impact delays on the stair project have been very frustrating to all of us that have been involved.”

“We are working with the contractor to manage the final compliance issues so the stairs can be handed over to council — we want the community and our visitors to be able to use the stairs so they can more easily access this magnificent part of our foreshore.”

Council advises the public that the staircase is currently not open, nor is it authorised for use. We advise members of the public not to enter or use the staircase.

Naming the stairs

Kiama Council’s Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) has requested Council staff engage Indigenous Elders to determine an appropriate name for the newly constructed stairs at Bombo.

Council has noted the request and will update the community on any developments.
