Breach of licence conditions in Darwin

A supermarket in the northern suburbs of Darwin has been issued with infringement notices after they were observed breaching conditions of their liquor licence.

The Alcohol Policing Unit conducted compliance checks at the business following increased reports of anti-social behaviour on Friday, 17 January. Whilst there, they identified a number of issues including:

  • Non-compliant responsible service of alcohol certificates
  • Serving intoxicated persons
  • Obstructed fire exits
  • Unsafe food handling practices

Upon arrival, police located a large group of intoxicated persons outside the store and an employee of the supermarket allegedly selling alcohol to an intoxicated male. Police also identified food items on display for sale which had passed their use by date, some of which were dated early 2019.

Additionally, the location is also the subject of a notice to comply, issued by the Northern Territory, Fire and Rescue Service, in regards to obstructed fire exits and failure to gain building consent.

Acting Commander Brendan Muldoon said “businesses which fail to comply with regulatory and statutory requirements that are in place to ensure the community safety will find themselves coming under the attention of police, more specifically the Alcohol Policing Unit.”

The business was issued infringements with a combined total of $4790 for contravening liquor licence conditions and for the sale of unsafe food which is a breach of the Northern Territory Food Act 2004.
