Broken promise leaves North West without vital hydrotherapy service

  • Latrobe hydrotherapy pool to remain shut and without funding
  • Liberal Government broken its budget commitment to Latrobe Council
  • Hydrotherapy needs of the Mersey community ignored
  • The Liberal Government has let down the North West community again by failing to uphold its commitment to fund upgrades to the Latrobe hydrotherapy pool at Strathdevon Aged Care Facility.

The pool has been an important health facility for the area and is vital to the physical and mental health and wellbeing of members of the local community.

Its future viability has been thrown into doubt by this Government.

Labor Member for Braddon Anita Dow said the Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff needs to explain why his government has broken its promise to the Latrobe Council and the local community, to provide funding in the State Budget to ensure the pool could reopen.

“In a budget focused on infrastructure, it shouldn’t have been difficult to find the relatively small amount needed to upgrade this important facility,” Ms Dow said.

“A commitment of just $200,000 would restore access to the pool for students of the NW Support School Devonport Campus and other community members, who in the past have benefitted greatly from using the pool as part of their rehabilitation and therapy programs.

“This is yet another example of health services in our region being downgraded by this government.

“I congratulate Mayor Freshney and Mayor Rockliff on their strong advocacy regarding the importance of this service to their communities and for holding the government to account on its broken Budget promise.

“Labor calls on the government to commit the $200,000 needed to ensure the Latrobe hydrotherapy pool can reopen. The government must also honour its commitment to reopen the North West Regional Hospital hydrotherapy pool in the new year.

“This government cannot continue to ignore the health needs of the North West community.”
