  • The McGowan Government is set to begin work on a unique, Australian-first health and wellbeing campus that will focus on culturally appropriate care for the Broome community.

The Yinajalan Ngarrungunil (Care for People) Broome Health and Wellbeing Campus will take shape on Dora Street on land owned by Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY), the operational company of the Yawuru people – Traditional Owners of the land and waters in and around Rubibi (Broome).

The McGowan Government has allocated $8 million to the project’s subdivision consultancy and civil works.

Broome business Roadline Civil Contractors will undertake the project, helping to support local jobs.

The campus will combine a holistic range of new facilities and services with a focus on enhancing the delivery of collaborative healthcare services in Broome.

It will promote culturally appropriate care, health and wellbeing and will include short stay accommodation, renal facilities and other tenancies.

The project is part of the Yawuru strategic vision for a sustainable future, including Mabu buru (healthy country) and mabu ngarrungunil (healthy people) for mabu liyan (good wellbeing).

It aims to deliver on the Yawuru Cultural Management Plan to contribute to the resilience and empowerment of the local people, while also addressing key Closing the Gap targets.

The McGowan Government will collaborate closely with established care organisations based at the site, with further care and associated services also being considered for the location.

The renal services are funded in part by the Commonwealth Government’s Health and Hospital Fund – Bringing Renal Dialysis and Services Closer to Home.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“The Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Broome Health and Wellbeing Campus is a unique project that will deliver culturally-appropriate care for the Broome community.

“It will support local jobs in its construction and provide important health and wellbeing services for many local people.

“Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Broome Health and Wellbeing Campus has taken shape as a result of the continuing partnership between the State Government and Nyamba Buru Yawuru.”

As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:

“The McGowan Government has been working closely with Nyamba Buru Yawuru to deliver land development projects in Broome.

“This project will deliver real benefits for people right across the West Kimberley, while creating local jobs.”

As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“The Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Health and Wellness Campus site is already home to Southern Cross Care’s Germanus Kent House Aged Care Facility and Bran Nue Dae respite care as well as MercyCare’s Broome short-stay accommodation for Aboriginal people.

“These are important service providers that support the local community and I’m so pleased we are able to collaborate with them and explore additional services for the site. It’s envisioned the campus will include short stay accommodation, renal capacity and a step up, step down facility.”

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Tony Buti:

“The concept of delivering a wide range of health and health aligned associated services on the one campus is unique and should provide benefits to the wider community across the region in future.

“I congratulate NBY on its leadership and ongoing commitment to providing quality opportunities for the Yawuru people and other groups across the region.”

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:

“By working closely with NBY, the McGowan Government is ensuring the Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Health and Wellbeing Campus comes together with a clear focus on what’s important for the region and its people.”
