Budget 2023 – Investing in our Future. Delivering for all Territorians – Enhancing Renewable Energy across the Territory

NT Government

Budget 2023 highlights the Territory Labor Government’s continued investment to deliver affordable, clean, reliable and stable energy for Territorians.

This Budget allocates $26.4 million towards new and current measures, including the establishment of a Renewable Energy Hub as part of our Government’s Darwin-Katherine Electricity System Plan.

Budget 2023 allocates $12 million to undertake planning and headworks to develop the hub. The hub will support the government’s renewable energy target of 50% by 2030 by investing in large-scale renewable solar farms to deliver clean and affordable power to Territorians.

To continue to develop new renewable energy industries, $1.7 million has been allocated in this year’s Budget to collect wind resource data, while $5.4 million has been earmarked to progress electricity market reforms and achieve our renewables target.

In a major win for electricity consumers, the popular Home and Business Battery Scheme will continue in 2023-24.

The Scheme provides grants to homeowners, businesses and not-for-profit organisations to buy and install batteries and inverters. The Scheme was launched in 2020 with a modest target to support 133 battery installations, but to date has resulted in more than 1600 batteries being installed across the Territory.

Energy in our remote communities is vital, that is why the $7.3 million remote power program will continue. The Government is also working to enable a broader section of the community to benefit from taking control of their electricity bills, providing funding for Jacana Energy to implement a trial of rooftop solar on 30 public housing tenancies in Darwin, Palmerston and Tennant Creek.
