A new boat ramp is about to be installed at Lake Bullen Merri’s South Beach.
The new modular design has a single pontoon with ramps either side and retaining walls to prevent sand build-up and assist with maintenance.
The ramp will be closed for the duration of the works. Options for temporary access are currently being explored.
South Beach Committee of Management Chairman Phil Russell said the committee and lake users were very excited for the project to reach a stage of “having boots on the ground”.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the state government for providing the funds,” he said.
“It’s an extremely valuable asset for the community, for the amount of people it will draw to our lake and providing local user groups the best possible access to the lake.
It’s been a great example of everyone working together to get it done.
“I can’t stress enough the valuable input all the user groups have had. They’re all volunteers and they’ve put their hands up and given their time to make it happen for people in the wider community.
“They’re the sort of people the community needs.”
Corangamite Shire Mayor Ruth Gstrein said the project would start on Tuesday 1 March and take about four months to complete.
“A lot of people have put a great deal of work into this and it will be terrific to see work start,” Cr Gstrein said.
“The South Beach Committee of Management, Better Boating Victoria, Fisheries Victoria, Parks Victoria, and Council staff have collaborated to ensure lake users can continue to access this wonderful community asset.
“This investment will be of great lifestyle value to locals and will enhance the visitor economy through events, activities and regular visiting anglers.”
Central Ward Councillor and keen lake user Laurie Hickey said the project would have widespread benefits.
“The lake is enjoyed for multiple uses fishing speedboats, jet-skis, kayaks and yachts, not to mention the Corangamite Open Water Swimmers who brave all the elements, he said.
“This upgrade will allow access to all those users and let everybody enjoy the community asset of the beautiful lake.”
Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne said the upgrade was being funded through the Victorian Government’s $33 million Better Boating Fund which returns boating licence and registration fees back into projects that will make boating better.
“When I met with the community at Lake Bullen Merri in April 2021 to discuss this upgrade, it was clear the lake is significant to so many, not only the local community but anglers and boaters across the state.
These improvements will go a long way to delivering safer and more accessible facilities, making boating better now and into the future.”
