Construction of a new Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) station at Charters Towers will headline a multimillion dollar boost to fire and emergency services in North Queensland.
Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford announced funding for the station as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s record $740 million for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in the latest Budget.
“Our Government is investing $900,000 in 2019-2020 to build the foundations of a first-class, $3 million fire station for Charters Towers,” Mr Crawford said.
“North Queensland continues to grow so it is crucial fire and emergency service personnel have the support they need to meet this challenge.
“The existing station has served Charters Towers well for many years, but it is essential we act now to cater for increased demand.
“The new station will feature dual engine bays, will accommodate permanent and auxiliary FRS personnel, and will store equipment that can be deployed quickly when needed.”
Mr Crawford said work would also continue in Mt Isa on the $3.4 million Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) combined complex.
“Once built, it will house vital supplies, equipment and vehicles and will be the nerve centre for FRS, State Emergency Service (SES) and Rural Fire Service (RFS) management and operations in Mt Isa,” he said.
“It is a first for QFES in the region and means QFES personnel will be better able to respond to incidents, emergencies and disasters across the region, including to the Gulf and the border with the Northern Territory.
“Initial groundworks were carried out last year to lay the foundations, and another $2.5 million will be spent in the 2019-2020 Budget to continue construction, with a view to opening in 2020.
“Both facilities will also generate more than 20 jobs during the construction phase to give locals the opportunity to contribute to these important projects.”
Mr Crawford said the latest round of investments in North Queensland were in addition to about $3.3 million spent on fire and emergency services projects in the region last financial year.
“This significant level of funding has delivered critical projects, including new RFS and SES facilities at Mt Isa and a relocated and upgraded Auxiliary FRS station at Richmond,” he said.
